Redefining LCD

Apparently there’s a new show on TLC called “Bama Belles.” I heard about it from a friend who happens to be from Dothan, Alabama (where the show is filmed). If you’re not familiar, here’s a taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxhYjq-4WyU
Here’s my reaction after watching the above clip:

"Then I will hear from heaven..."

When I heard this evening that the GOP was projected to take back control of the House, as was widely anticipated, I wanted to come up with a pithy status message invoking Obama’s statement in 2008, where he said: “I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when... our planet began to heal.”

A quick word on Halloween

A friend recently told me that her family does not "do Halloween." I'm sure that's true of many of you, and I salute you. According to History.com: "The Celtic holiday of Samhain, the Catholic Hallowmas period of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day and the Roman festival of Feralia all influenced the modern holiday of Halloween."

But If That’s What It Takes...

The last couple of years have been challenging, not only for me, but for many of my family and friends. Some have had health problems, others have been through financial hardship, and still others have lost loved ones. If this were the plot of a movie, one might at this point begin to wonder when the hero was going to emerge and save the day.

Perspective Revisited

When I was growing up, I loved Christian music, almost to a fault. I was on a first name basis with the programming director of a local Christian radio station, and it would drive me crazy whenever one of my brothers wanted to listen to the local oldies station. On one occasion I said in a stern voice: “You’re so secular!”
By the time I went off to college, I was listening almost religiously to “Casey’s Top 40.” It’s only been in the last 5-10 years that I’ve started to really pay attention to the messages in songs. Sometimes I’ve found that a song most people would regard as simply a fun song actually has a profound meaning, either for good or for ill.

But There Is No Peace

“The International Day of Peace, also known as the World Peace Day, occurs annually on the 21st of September. It is dedicated to peace, or specifically the absence of war...” (Wikipedia)
“It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace-- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun!” (Patrick Henry, referencing Jeremiah 6:14)
“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34)

My thoughts this Independence Day (weekend)

I read an article today about a recent Marist poll that said 26 percent of those surveyed didn’t know which country we gained independence from. Most of you, if you read my notes and comments to articles I post, are familiar with my views regarding public education in America. That’s not the point of this note.

Dancing Nancies

“Could I have been anyone other than me?”

For the last few months a dear friend here in the South has been keeping me up to speed on the antics of a candidate for national office in her state. This candidate claims to be a follower of Christ but has made it clear time and again that they have, at best, a very warped understanding of the separation of church and state, and will gladly put aside their stated religious beliefs in order to get elected. This candidate, because they are running in a district with a large homosexual population, is supporting “equality,” i.e. “gay rights.”

Perspective...

In a recent note I talked about Zo Rachel's address at a Dallas Tea Party and his admonishment that we should focus not so much on our shrinking wallets but on the One Who gave us the tools to fill those wallets. In this note I'd like to focus on a similar theme.

Methinks Zo was on to something...

Some of you know AlfonZo Rachel, who posts video commentaries on YouTube and PJTV.com. Zo was recently asked to speak at a Tea Party in Dallas, Texas, and in his address he rightly made the point that while economic issues are important, the real issue is what he called "a deficiency of God" -- i.e., we are so focused on our shrinking wallets that we've neglected the One Who gave us the tools to be able to fill those wallets.
